I’m looking to slice some wooden dowels into a number of equal length (~1/2") pieces for a project. How would you go about doing that?

Do you have a table saw or a miter saw?

Depends on how thick and how many, but a miter saw would be the easiest/quickest. Put a hard stop a half inch from the blade and go to town.

If I’m okay with some slop: measure and cut one, use that to make more marks to cut the rest (don’t measure again).
If I want as close as possible: measure slightly past desired length, cut one. Use that one to make marks to cut the rest. Sand them down gradually until they’re all exactly the desired length, making frequent comparisons while sanding.

If you have a table saw, set the fence and go to town.
If the required length is too great or
you have a band saw, cut one piece as a master and use it as a guide to cut each new piece (align the ends, cut where the dowel ends). If you have neither, and only have a hack saw, chop them to approximate length and then true them with a master dowel, or use the one-at-a-time band saw technique.

Miter snips or trim shears work good on 3/8 or less dowels.

I’d probably use a table knife, but I’m also not a handyperson.

Hire Lorena Bobbit? I heard she was suddenly popular again, so contact her before she’s booked up.
Honestly, assuming no table saw or band saw (with a fence) you can just use the first one as a template for the rest. Even if not accurate, you’ll at least be precise.

This kinda sounds like what I had planned.

I would use my compound miter saw with a stop set at the 1/2" away from the blade, then start chopping like a crazy man.

If you have two C-clamps, a framing square, and a 2x4, then you have a fence.

Clamp a board to the table to use as a fence.
A cutting guide doesn’t always have to be a fancy repeatable setup.

5/8 is small enough, you could probably build a jig for a hack saw. A circular saw with a fine tooth blade and another jig would work also and be better than a manual saw for a large number of them . A couple scrap pieces of wood nailed together to hold the dowel with a gap for the blade and a hard stop at whatever thickness you need. Cut, dump the piece out, push the dowel until it stops again, cut again, repeat.

I was going to say I’d buy wood dowels in the size I wanted, but I can’t find 1/2" long dowels even on wood dowels.com So my next answer is drill your holes deeper

Use the table saw. Add a custom fence and a feather board. Since you’re cutting small parts off of big ones, the video below might help. He’s cutting thin ribs for a canoe from thick stock and he talks about feather boards and a custom fence.
